Hall and several other cast members, players found themselves plunked into the middle of Dexter’s first kill as he confirmed that choir leader Mike Donovan was killing the boys in the choir.
After preparing his kill room, Dexter snuck up behind the choir teacher and strangled him before setting him up in the kill room and exposing him to the evidence of his crimes. Kills are carried out through pattern-matching mini-games, and finding evidence that implicates Dexter’s victims was a crucial gameplay mechanic, but it was also about maintaining Dexter’s dual life.
For example, if he took pleasure in the kills and displayed particularly malicious behavior, it became harder for him to keep the mild-mannered blood spatter analyst personality in check because the Dark Passenger gained more power.

The cast and crew of Dexter were supportive, with some of the cast providing full voice work for Dexter the Game, including Michael C. Hall reprising his role of Dexter Morgan. The game begins with a narration by Dexter who introduces himself and says that he is going to kill that night. His target is Mike Donovan, an upstanding teacher and choir director. Dexter discovers that he has been burying his dirty secrets when he follows Donovan to the outskirts of Miami.
After Donovan leaves, Dexter investigates the area and confirms his suspicions that Donovan has been killing his own choir boys and burying their bodies. Dexter prepares his Kill Room in a nearby building; all it needs is Donovan.

Dexter wakes up the sedated Donovan and takes a blood slide through a scalpel cut. He makes Donovan confess to his crimes and kills him. Dexter dumps Donovan’s remains into the sea and adds his blood slide to his collection. After more than a year in development, the Dark Passenger finally calls the iPhone home. Dexter , developed by Icarus Studios and published by Marc Ecko Entertainment , makes playable several cases and situations that were critical to the first season of the macabre Showtime series. The final result is a purposefully grim adventure game soaked with blood, aimed squarely at older gamers.
With scenes that include stealth and slashing, it is a welcome respite from the sea of puzzle games, line-drawing clones, and racers that currently populate the App Store. Verdict The iPhone needs more mature-themed games like Dexter to keep broadening its appeal. The stealth, blood spatter, and grotesquely clam pre-kill conversations are all appropriately creepy.
The police work is a great way to offset the violence. It helps create a complete universe for Dexter to live in instead of just devolving into a manic killing spree. As part of that balance, the game itself worked hard to balance Dexter’s everyday life, providing numerous hours of gameplay while he tended to his cases, interacted with NPCs, gathered evidence and spent time in his apartment.
Dexter was received well enough that it spawned a sequel. Plans were eventually announced to release the game on Xbox and PlayStation 3, but those releases never materialized. It’s been eleven years since the game’s release and nearly eight years since the final episode aired on Showtime.
With the limited-run revival coming in November , fans will likely start re-watching while a whole new generation of viewers is catching up in time to tune in. Sadly, this first Dexter game won’t be part of that journey; the title is delisted on iOS, and the PC version was only ever released physically and is long since out of print. Given the positive reviews the game received, perhaps it’s time for a remaster and release, not just for iOS and Android, but for next-gen consoles as well.

Cue a conversation that makes it pretty clear that while Michael C. Hall was paid well enough to lend his voice to this, the cheque was nowhere near enough for any actual ‘acting’.
As elsewhere here, he talks with all the drive and passion of a Vulcan sex therapist, before agreeing to take Rita to a crab restaurant for an equally gruff romantic dinner. Obviously, minigame! And here’s a real head-tilter. Then it gets even weirder. Having killed more crabs than a pharmacy-bought insecticide, Dexter glances round to see a crime scene has spontaneously appeared.
He ambles over to help, because why not – answer, being on a date – and Rita is oddly laid back about that. It’s another Ice Truck Killer one of course, so just decoration. At this point, the game pretty much settles into a routine.
Dexter gets two targets, captured and dealt with in much the same way as the first, before opening his refrigerator to find a ‘present’ from the Ice Truck Killer. At this point, the game unceremoniously ends, to be continued in a new episode that did come out for iOS, but never made it to PC. It’s not exactly hard to guess why. To give Dexter: The Game credit, as an iPhone adventure , it’s not utterly terrible. It at least tries to capture the mood of the series with its voices and official music and following Dexter through his usual capture pattern and trying to hide out.
It’s just unfortunate that the minigames are terrible, and it doesn’t have the guts to follow through with the actual kills—or more likely, nobody reckoned their chances of having a ‘murder a man wrapped in clingfilm’ minigame past Apple, even if they were bad. I haven’t played the second game, but it looks slightly more technologically ambitious with its driving and so on.

For example, if he took pleasure in the kills and displayed particularly malicious behavior, it became harder for him to keep the mild-mannered blood spatter analyst personality in check because the Dark Passenger gained more power.
Anyone who’s watched the series knows that Harry’s Code was designed to keep Dexter from getting caught, and a major part of that code was keeping the Dark Passenger carefully guarded with that mild-mannered and unassuming mask that helped him fit into society.
