And I want to be abundantly clear that by “upgrading a machine” that you will be using the “Upgrade this PC Now” option. This is different than installing Windows 10 “from scratch” to change the OS on the machine. Although that is an OS upgrade it does not use the Windows Upgrade process. If you are trying to do a “from scratch” install you will need a license key, and the latest version from the Media Creation Tool allows you to use any valid Windows 7 or Windows 8 license key.

There is one proviso, though, if the Win7 or Win8 license key is from the OEM version of Windows installed on a given machine it will work only on the machine that had this license key “from birth. If you are using Windows 7 without any “Service Packs”, then you should upgrade to Windows 7 SP1 first, before you upgrade to Windows And if you are using Windows 8 not 8.

This should be considered standard practice before doing any sort of major update or upgrade on an operating system and it can’t be emphasized, or repeated, enough. Failing to do so can lead to a complete catastrophe if the upgrade were to fail for any reason, and they occasionally do.

When I was using the Win10 preview it was very good about rolling things back if an upgrade failed, but there is absolutely no guarantee that this will work.

Heck, you can even make an image of both the OS and the data. MarikaT, I’m going to give you the same advice I give anyone who’s considering a major OS upgrade or who wants to change their primary OS entirely: Get yourself out there and do a “test drive” for at least several hours to see how you like it!!

Whether that pain is worth it is something only you can determine for yourself. The transition from Win8 to Win10 is substantially easier and I really like Win10 much better than Win8. It brought back some of the features we all knew and loved from all the earlier versions of Windows e. However, if you’re a Win8 “superuser” the removal of the charms bar good riddance, from my perspective might drive you insane.

Find a friend who’s got a Win10 machine and ask them if they will set up an account for you so you can come over and play with Win10 when they’re going to be away for a couple of hours.

My general statement is that you can expect all of your user data to remain intact and probably most, but not all, of your programs. I recommend that people reinstall whatever might get swept into Windows.

While there is no option to resume the download itself, it is at least possible to resume the creation of the installation media if the download completed successfully. It is hidden from sight however and not available in the tool’s interface. These folders contain the installation files, and an option to resume the creation process if it fails. Please note that these folders get populated during download, and that the download needs to complete successfully for all files to become available.

When you start it, the process will resume the last operation instead of starting completely anew. This means that it will resume the creation of the media using the downloaded setup files. This means that the files may remain on the drive even after the successful completion of the process. You may want to delete them after you have created installation media for Windows 10 as they take up Gigabytes of storage space. Please note that these folders may be hidden by default.

You need to make them visible first using the folder options. The missing download resume option is problematic, especially for users with slow or unreliable Internet connections. No workaround or alternative is available right now that would improve the experience for users. Can the folders be safely removed? They can be deleted using the Disk Cleanup Utility. As instructed in the message i restarted my pc and tried to run the media creation tool again and again after rebooting my pc but the result was same. Doing that multiple times it finally ran again. I thought running the media creation tool again would delete all the previously downloaded files.

What should I do about this? Should I stop the program and follow the instructions in this tip? Hello dear. There is no sub folder named windows in the mentioned folder. Microsoft should have a solution. If they do not why they insist to download it through media creation tool. If that’s the case, I would strongly suggest that you or someone you know who has a high speed connection use the Media Creation Tool to create either a bootable USB stick or a DVD that you can use to do your upgrade. When you run the tool after you download it you have the option to upgrade the machine it’s running on or to create media for another PC, and you would want to do the latter.

You need to make sure that you choose the correct version of Windows 10, Home or Pro, and the correct bit-size 32 or 64 for the machine you intend to upgrade.

Be aware that the media takes several hours to upgrade even on reasonably high speed DSL. It’s just short of 5GB in size for Win10 Home bit, at least if memory serves, so it’s not going to be fast pretty much anywhere or anywhere that I ever have internet access.
